Nice to Meet You: Weird Wednesday #1

I understand now the Proustian inclination for chefs to write their life story before every recipe. How else could you understand how all of those ingredients came together and why they meant enough to write them down in the first place, and, should you not like what you've cooked, a little sympathy for someone who is tied to that recipe by their own sentimentalism. What it is is the equivocation of putting creative work out in the world.

And maybe I would feel that is necessary here if it wasn't for the fact that my friend JoAnna, after I re-discovered the video and sent her a link, said “…why would you think I would like this. It is terrifying.” I had forgotten the thrill at the reaction of the audience when it was shown at the original Alamo Drafthouse on 4th and Colorado.

There are some things you need to know about “Nice to Meat You” to give it some context, though. It was shot as part of the Bloodshots 48 Hour Film Festival, hosted at the Original Alamo Draftouse, Austin, Texas, October 2004. As a team we were given a genre of horror (“cannibal”); a murder weapon (“telephone); and all teams had to use the line “I gave blood on Monday.”

Enjoy, if you dare.
